Jury Duty: The Most Relaxing Time Off

I just got back from a vacation spot that’s so exclusive, you have to be invited to go there.
Normally, you’d have to win a sweepstakes to have a getaway fall into your lap. But, through a
crazy stroke of luck, I was sent a ticket to paradise… I was summoned for jury duty.

Just about every time you log on to social media, there’s a good chance you’ll see someone’s
extravagant vacation pictures show up in your feed. For many, this is a source of FOMO. But the
R&R I just experienced would give even those vacation-posting people the fear of missing out.

As soon as I got this invitation to escape, I immediately knew that I was in for a good time. My
entire vacation schedule had already been mapped out for me. How can you say no to a
vacation you don’t have to plan?! I must’ve gotten the VIP treatment. Also, apparently not
showing up for jury duty is against the law. When people want you to take time off that badly,
you can’t help but smile. If the thrills stopped with my vacation being preplanned, that would be
more than enough surprises for me, but they just kept coming.

I don’t know about you, but I want my vacation time to be entertaining. And entertainment is
what I got. When you’re on a jury, you have a front-row seat to an epic courtroom drama that’s
bursting at the seams with tension. The one I witnessed was about a scratched gumball
machine.

This luxurious vacation experience is one that you should really keep to yourself. You don’t want
people to be jealous of you. A buddy of mine was recently talking to me about a vacation that
he’s been looking forward to. I didn’t have the heart to tell him about my recent sabbatical,
because he only won a trip to Hawaii. I feel sorry for him. But hey, there’s always a bigger fish.

A life-changing experience puts things into perspective. I can’t believe that the young me once
thought the yearlong wait for Christmas was too long to bear. I now have to wait a full year—just
for the chance to be selected for jury duty again. It’s painful to accept that the Christmas I’m
waiting for now might only come once every few years.

But I can’t be sad that I may never get summoned for jury duty again. I need to be glad that I did
in the first place. And I know it will mean a lot to you when I say that I hope you get summoned,
too.

Happy travels,

Brady
